The Month in Updates

This month has seen the resignation of a cabinet Minister, the death of a great mind and the death of a dictator. You may notice that at J.G.W. Politics we write updates on a regular basis and here are some of the most influential, shocking or important moments of October.

Tuesday 25th October
Conservative Rebels
81 Conservative MPs, which is around half of Tory backbenchers defied Cameron's 3 line whip and voted for an EU referendum. The Prime Minister has been in office for just over a year and it seems he is already loosing grip on his party. He suffered huge criticisms from his own MPs in the Commons yesterday and the debate seemed more like the Tory front bench against the backbenchers. Is this the beginning of the end for Cameron's leadership or is it just a hiccup?

Friday 21st October
Gaddafi Dead
The overthrown dictator of Libya was pronounced dead yesterday after a gun battle in Sirte, one of the last remaining Gaddafi strong holds. He was said to have been injured in the conflict, captured and then died from his wounds. Today it was announced that an inquiry over the circumstances of his death will be carried out.

Wednesday 19th October
Police Move in at Dale Farm
Dale Farm has been an on running issue for some time now but today riot police were deployed to clear the site. There have been reports of violent clashes, fires and Tasers being used. The issue lies in how far the government is willing to go to accommodate the traveling section of our society. By law the government has to give alternative accommodation to the people they displace, however this alternative accommodation was brick houses which did not fit in to the travelers lifestyle or beliefs. So are the government being unreasonable or are the travelers not connecting with mainstream society?

Tuesday 18th October
Inflation at 5.2%
Inflation in the UK has been slowly growing and today it hit 5.2%, this is way above the governments target. High inflation means products become have become more expensive which makes it more difficult to live. This means for people whose pay is frozen this year, such as public sector workers, will experience what is effectively a pay cut. This is does not seem fair to me.

Sunday 9th October
Questions Mount Against Fox
The Defence Secretary Liam Fox is facing more questions about the role of his friend Adam Werritty. Mr Werritty's business cards claimed he was the advisor of Liam Fox and there is footage of the two men meeting the Sri Lankan Prime Minister. David Cameron has ordered a report on the issue and has demanded preliminary findings by monday. If this is found to be true then Fox may be on his way to the Job Centre by Tuesday.

Friday 7th October
Afghanistan: 10 years on
10 years ago today a US led NATO force entered Afghanistan as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11th. Just under 3000 NATO soldiers have been killed in the conflict, Afghans have lost many times that number. Afghanistan is arguably more unstable now then it ever has been, and three years does not seem like long enough to aid a recovery and ensure stability in the country. If NATO troops do leave in 2014 it seems likely that the Taliban will retake power and the whole war would be pointless, but do we truly want to stay on for another 10 years? And would that even do any good?

Thursday 6th October
Steve Jobs Dies
Today the co-creator of Apple died after a long struggle with cancer. He was key to the expansion and success of  the Apple company and was the charismatic leader of the iCult. He was also vital to making Pixar the success it is today. Jobs was the innovator of making technology that looks great and works seamlessly. Apple Mac's, iPod's, iPhone's and iPad's have changed how we live our lives and part of that is down to a man with a vision. RIP Steve Jobs.
